Is Ignorance Bliss?

In the movie The Matrix, Cypher is having dinner with Agent Smith, and plotting his betrayal of Morpheus. He takes a large bite of juicy steak and concludes, “. . . ignorance is bliss.” He tells Agent Smith he wants to be rich, someone important, like an actor.”  Agent Smith says, “Whatever you want. . .” Then Cypher says something stunning, “I want to remember nothing.” Meaning he does not want to remember the truth of the Matrix nor does he want to remember that he is a betrayer.

This really summarizes the dilemma of human kind. We want badly to believe that ignorance is bliss and that if we just keep on keeping on eventually we will all become someone important.

I see this often in the people that I teach in my office or workshops. Witness Thought Transformation™ is easy, it is simple, and it results in a flood of Awareness. With this Awareness, however, ignorance is no longer possible. The problem with Awakening is that you will remember! That is not to say that you won’t be rich, or important by the world’s standards. You might even be an actor. But you won’t care! It will not be your focus. Awareness is a reward far greater than what role we play in life.

Awareness also has a price. We see that if we confront the dark things inside of ourselves and discover Truth we will no longer be special, important. We give up the dream of being an actor – rich. We realize that we are part of the One Self. We are not separate from the flow. We, as individuals, are nothing.

One of the greatest spiritual teachers of modern times Nisargadatta said, “Like the worms in the cow dung, the moment the cow dung dries they are finished, how ever much progress they have made.” Wow, that is tough stuff! 

Unfortunately I meet many people like Cypher. They eagerly dive into Witness Thought Transformation™ only to realize they must confront the truth of the ego-mind and their own insignificance. Before you know it, they too are having dinner with Agent Smith trying to reinsert themselves back into the drama of their lives and the story of their own self-importance.

I have one thing to say, don’t do it! The illusion spun by the ego-mind is a matrix, but it is a matrix of suffering with the promise of future fulfillment. Beyond the mind, beyond thought, is the Truth.  It has been right in front of you all the time. It is the Present. It is Divine, it is fulfilling, and it is our true home. There is nothing wrong with Now! Only the ego protests since it no longer exists when we are fully present. We trade the self for the Self. We lose the little “me” that lives in the head and discover Self, Life, the Unity of Being. To do that, we must give up our attachment to the story of “me.” It is just that, a story. Oh it is a real story to be sure, but it is only a story.

So here is the dilemma. Practice Witness Thought Transformation™ and wake up from the dream of the story of “me” and the promise of future fulfillment or be reinserted back into the drama – the matrix and stay in the gooey cocoon where ignorance is bliss.

You might want to know how to be reinserted back into the matrix. Simple, just believe your thoughts. Tired of ignorance? Witness thought and be free of the mind.
