Unconscious Zombies

I had the opportunity to look at Romans 8 the other day. I can hear it now. As soon as you read this you thought, oh no Waller has gone religious. No! Not so. Why would I do that, you ask. Because I am absolutely convinced that Paul understood that we have a part of us living in our head that was up to no good. He called it our "carnal nature." I call it the Limbic System. Those of you who have read my book The Dance of the Lion and the Unicorn are very familiar with my thoughts on the Limbic System. Well, what does all of this have to do with the concept of sin and death in Romans 8?

To understand the linkage we must go to the Greek word for sin which is amartia  or hamartia. This word is derived from an archery term and it literally means "to miss the mark." The Greek word for "death" means either literal or figurative death. Going back to sin for a moment, if I told you that you were missing the mark, what would I be saying? To a certain extent I would be telling you that you were in error or making a mistake. But I think there is a meaning that is clearer. If I said you are literally missing the mark then figuratively I am saying you are missing the point! So Paul is saying that due to our Limbic System we are missing the point and we are figuratively dead. My translation of that is that we are unconscious zombies.

He also talks about the fact that we are "after the flesh" instead of after the Spirit. Spirit is an interesting and often misconstrued word. It literally means "breath." Figuratively is means "essence." So Spirit (with a capital S) means Divine Essence. "Flesh" in this context means the outer or what we see on the outside. Again, my translation of what Paul is saying is that we are focusing on drama instead of Divine Essence. The Limbic System with its Lion and Unicorn patterns is a system of addiction to drama.

If we remove the moral lens that has hampered our understanding of scripture for nearly 2000 years, we see that the New Testament contains a message of awakening and awareness, not a message of right and wrong. In fact it is the Limbic System's tendency toward judging everything in terms of right and wrong that is the original sin of mankind - the original unconsciousness. Waking up from the Lion/Unicorn Dance is a realization of Divine Essence. Our eyes are opened and we for once see life with innocent perception.

I am in the middle of several rather large projects at the moment. First and most important, I am writing a new book entitled, Awakening: Exposing the Voice of the Mosaic Mind. Also, very soon I will have nearly all of my public appearances available on audio CD. My basic workshop on the Lion/Unicorn Theory will soon be available on DVD. In addition, I am currently redesigning my website.
