The Value of "You" Talking to You

I do this often with my clients in my office. Try this experiment. I am going to ask you a question. Answer the question and take a moment before you come back to this article. Where is your driver’s license?

Now notice how, in the moment I asked the question, your brain processed the answer. The information was presented to you immediately. Often times, there is a picture of the location of the license. It might best be described as a knowing. This is how knowledge is accessed inside of all of us. First there is learning and then the information appears when needed quite spontaneously. Knowledge, wisdom, awareness, and intuition are words we use for this instantaneous realization that we experience.

Here is another question. What is the best way to remember something you can’t remember? If you reflect on how you remember things, you will realize that most often, if the answer doesn’t come immediately, the best thing to do is to forget about it. This is somewhat paradoxical, but we have all had the experience that sometime later the answer just pops into our minds. So forgetting can be the best way to remember! Continually talking to ourselves, cycling through it in our minds, never produces the spontaneous emergence of anything, but more thinking.

Okay, so what is the point to all of this? The point is that knowledge never involves self-talk. The voice in the head that sounds like you talking to you is not involved in knowledge, wisdom, awareness, and intuition.  Certainly it is a tool of language, and as that it has its uses. For instance, when I am writing this I am deeply involved with language so I am sub vocalizing as I write. But most of us use it for one purpose – to make ourselves feel better. We use it to manage our anxiety, justify our behaviors, reinforce our point of view, and bolster our philosophy. Of course we also compulsively rehearse for the next moment.

Generally, it adds little to our experience and enjoyment of life itself which is after all why the experience of life is happening. The voice in the head – thinking- has nothing to do with being present, experiencing the unfolding of the moment or of connecting with what is right in front of us.

Witness Thought Transformation™ is a simple, yet elegant practice that subjugates the mind and puts the voice in the head in its place along with other functions of the body, brain, and central nervous system. When thought is reclassified along with headaches, flatulence, sore muscles, night mares, and all the other functions that go along with owning a body, we find ourselves in a new world.

In this world we are no longer limited to the content of our thought. Since we don’t identify the voice as a “me” that lives in the head, we can go on to find a Self that exists beyond inner verbiage. Often my clients will look at me bewildered and ask, “If I am not the voice in my head, who am I?” Answer that question and you have solved the mystery of life!

Mark! Where the heck have you been?

Good question. My life has been impacted by two major events in the last several months. First, due to the economy, I have undertaken a major overhaul of my psychotherapy practice. The result has been astounding. My practice has exploded. I am now seeing over 30 people a week and managing that kind of growth has been difficult and has demanded an enormous amount of time. My phone is ringing almost constantly and, unfortunately, the paperwork requirements have increased exponentially.

This has all happened in the middle of a planned move to the Central Valley of California. I am now spending every Wednesday in Porterville (45 mile north of Bakersfield) laying the ground work for eventually moving my practice. My wife, Sheila, has a wonderful job there, but she still commutes back to our home in Chino Hills on the weekends. This situation has lasted for nearly a year due to the real estate market. Such is life.

Were this all leads and when it ends is anyone’s guess. But you know the course of life is anyone’s guess. This has taught me deeper levels of surrender and vigilance over my ego’s tendency to anticipate what’s next. I learn all this because Life is forcing me to!

All my best.
