We Are Out of Our Minds

Maybe I should say we are outside of the mind. But even so there is no mind! Think about it. What we call a mind is nothing more than identification. Scientist are coming to the conclusion that, “The mind is what the brain does.” So the mind, from this perspective, is nothing more than identification with the activity of the brain and central nervous system. In other words, thoughts, pictures, and feelings do not occur in a mind as such, they occur in the brain. Since we identify ourselves with this mental activity, we automatically assume there is this other item called a mind.

Since we identify with the “mind” we learn to live in it. Everything that happens in mind becomes accumulated into the story of us. My thoughts occur in my mind, and when we wrap it all together we get my “self.”  Some philosophers ask the question, is the mind nothing more than an idle side effect of brain processes. I say, no! The question presupposes that the mind is a thing, an object. Brain activity occurs. When we identify it as my activity, the mind is born. But it is nothing more than a concept that emerges from identification.

The problem is that we think we own everything. We own our house and our car. We own our wives and our children. The ego-mind that emerges from this identification has a disgusting sense of entitlement. It is the source of most of the nightmare we call life on planet earth. So identification leads to ownership, and ownership leads to entitlement and in the process we lose our true identity and the sense of Divinity that is our existence.

So we think we have a mind. We know this because we can watch it. We have awareness of its activity. Plus it comes Taylor-made with a “me” feeling that goes along with it. But ask yourself this question, “If you are your mind, who or what is watching it?” This watching, does it not contain the so called “mind?” Aren’t thoughts also contained inside this watching? What about “me.” Is it not also something that can be watched with awareness?

Indeed, we are out of our minds. The problem of humankind is that we refuse to acknowledge it. We have created this mind through false identification and then wrapped it around ourselves like a comfortable little placenta. But the entire time there is this watching. What is watching, who is watching? This is the reality of our true identity. But you will never know unless you lose your mind!

A new issue, a new year, and a new name.

It is hard to believe it has been one year since I started my newsletter, The World of Lions and Unicorns. Since I have a new book coming out in a few weeks, it is time for a change that embraces the themes that will be presented in the new book: Awakening. Awakening makes the proposition that we can discover our true Self. This broader theme embraces the scope of new ideas we will be talking about here in the months to come.
