Witness Thought Therapy

A Quiet Revolution

Its hard for me to imagine what the last few months has brought to me in the way I go about helping people. I have decided to call it "Witness Thought Therapy" and it really is a two step process. It is as if many small things came together in a huge insight to change how I thought and what I did with people. I had three clients that made major breakthroughs whose experience was critical. Let me tell you what happened.

I had long been fascinated by the subject of enlightenment and in my reading I had become more aware of the role that thoughts play in keeping us enslaved to our conditioned, ego mind. Some time ago it occurred to me that the key was to literally become aware of each and every thought. Then along came a client who did just that. After just two weeks of thought watching she had one of the most powerful awakening experiences I had ever seen! Wow!

What happened next was one of my other clients after many months of therapy read my book and also had a very powerful awakening experience. My experience with this client gave me an insight into "witness consciousness" that I never had. Looking back over both of these clients, I realized that after this powerful perceptual awakening, the "witness" or the "watcher" becomes the therapist. In other words, when we see clearly what the mind is doing, issues resolve themselves easily and clearly.

Armed with this knowledge and experience, I decided to shift gears with the third client. This is where the two step process comes in. In both of the previous cases, reading my book was the crucial step toward opening the person to "watching." The benefit of the Lion/Unicorn theory is that it dramatically helps you see yourself and your patterns. The reader immediately has the sense of, "Hey, wait a minute. There is something going on in my subconscious."

This creates an opening through ego mind for something greater to happen. The possibility now exists that the person can start to see their conditioned patterns as separate from themselves. So this sets the stage for the third client.

The third client was someone who was returning after some time to therapy. I gave him the book and it blew him away. He had a powerful experience of identifying himself and his patterns as he read the dialog of the characters in the book. When I saw this, I seized the moment to direct him to start watching his thoughts. This was not easy or natural for him. It took the better part of two sessions for him to understand the concept. Nevertheless two weeks later, he had a powerful awakening into witness consciousness.

As a result of all of this, two things happened. First, Witness Thought Therapy was born. Along with that, I established "witnessing" groups to support people in this new work. So the revolution has begun and I am sure my work and my life will never be the same. By the way, all of these three clients left therapy shortly after their awakening. Since the witness becomes the therapist, they no longer needed me. Please send me some referrals. Witness Thought Therapy promises to put me out of work!

Mark Waller Ph.D. LMFT

"A conscious relationship occurs when people are able to see their conditioned mind busy making meaning, perceptions and giving them feelings and reactions that are based on past experience rather than on present experience. By seeing this about themselves each partner then is conscious of what the other person is doing with their conditioned mind. This is a relationship based on awareness rather than automatic response."

Welcome to my first ever e-mail newsletter. I have been wanting to do this for some time, and it seems the time is right. Feel free to respond, ask questions, and share it with others.

I am in the process of setting up a discussion group on Yahoo. Hopefully, many of us will be able to meet there and share ideas.
